Consequence-free fun machine
See this snowboarder touching down on the new BigAirBag Landing. You might have seen airbags before, but this thing is in a completely different league compared to others. As man can see, the landing area sits at a similar angle like the normal slope. It’s undeniably impressive and, based on several riders’ reactions, clearly an absolute must have for any Extreme Sports facility. A consequence-free fun machine, where any trick that can be imagined can be attempted.

Firstly, we have seen Martin Söderström playing around in the Dome Adrenaline zone in Sweden showing some awesome tricks in the Bigairbag Landing. Martin Sörderström is currently a Red Bull Athlete and Freestyle Mountain biking extraordinaire. “These airbags are insane. You think it’s going to absorb you, but then you just land and ride away. Maybe we can have these airbags as landings at competitions in the future, so we don’t have to break our bones!” says Martin.
“Having in between-fun with head firsts”
The GB park and ride team was practising on the Bigairbag Landing during training hours before the Olympics. It offered them the possibility to push their limits and broaden their boundaries in order to shine bright, when the whole world was watching. In Mottolino, an Italian resort not far from the Swiss border, the size, and indeed the shape, are like nothing we have ever seen before. Bigairbag teamed up with the shape masters of Schneestern to build a facility to the highest possible standard. While there is no snow flake out of place, an high throughput rate and increased safety supplies, it offers national teams and Olympic programs an ideal training area. The riders of GB park and ride have not taken long to get used to the setup, some were even sending triples like it is nothing. British head snowboard coach Hamish McKnight was extremely positive, where the Americans use their “Secret Weapon” training method, the British coach said: “the Americans like a lot of feedback.. whereas as coaches, we try and keep it simple. The riders have to do the work, it is them that need to figure it out.” As a result of Bigairbag’s significant safer landings every rider of the team focussed on different aspects of Freestyle ski or snowboarding. Jamie Nicholls was looking into uncharted territory with backside 1620s, while Aimee Fuller is refining her signature double backflip. Katie Ormerod, aware that her grab was the missing piece in her Big Air game, was working on improving that element of her cab 9 and is visibly pleased with the results. Matt McCormick is having in between-fun with head firsts into the bag.
