Montana artist debuts work at National Stationary Show
From the Rocky Mountains to NYC Claire Emery brings passion for nature to the printed world.
May 15, 2018, Missoula, Montana — Montana naturalist and artist Claire Emery of Emery Art & Illustration is debuting her woodblock prints at the 2018 National Stationary Show, May 20 – 23 at the Javits Center in New York City. Inspired by nature and carved, printed and painted by hand, Emery’s notecards, calendars, art prints and tote bags featuring her original artwork will be on display throughout the show.
“In a world that’s increasingly moving to the digital form, it’s easy to lose touch with nature and tactile beauty,” said artist and NSS exhibitor Claire Emery. “I’m excited to bring my art to a national platform to allow those living even in the most urban setting to experience the beauty and wonder of the natural world.”
Emery starts nearly every day in the mountains surrounding her home in Missoula, Montana. With her field journal in hand, she sketches wildflowers, birds, trees and western Montana scenes of mountains and cabins. In her workshop Emery traces her sketches on woodblocks and meticulously carves them into the 3D form. The process continues with hand printing her woodcut onto paper and painting the print in deep layers of watercolor that transform her natural subjects into vibrant original pieces of art.
“I see my work as a tool to engage people with the natural landscape as well as conservation issues,” said Emery. “If we can inspire people to appreciate all living things, more people will connect with nature and their community and gain greater understanding of the ecological challenges our planet faces.”
Emery is a member of 1% of the Planet, a global network of businesses, nonprofits and individuals working together to support environmental solutions. She has also collaborated with YouTube SciShow creator Hank Green and several conservation groups, including Glacier National Park, Vital Ground, the Montana Osprey Project, California State Parks, Montana Audubon, the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition, and the Fire Center at the University of Montana.
