Humboldt Redwood Offers Redwood and Douglas-fir Timbers for Indoor and Outdoor Projects

Strong, beautiful, and environmentally friendly timbers can be used in many structural applications

SANTA ROSA, CA (May 14, 2018) – Humboldt Redwood, a leading manufacturer and distributor of redwood and Douglas-fir lumber products, offers naturally strong, beautiful, and environmentally friendly redwood and Douglas-fir timbers that work for just about every structural building need.

“The use of redwood or Douglas-fir timbers for timber framing and exposed beam construction can produce dramatic results while lending the natural beauty and strength of wood to any building project,” says Bob Mertz, CEO. “Our redwood timbers are perfect for outdoor shade structures and pergolas. Our Douglas-fir timbers possess the strength and span capability for interior applications like posts and beams.”

Redwood Timbers

Redwood is a unique choice for timbers as it is one of the lightest, yet strong, softwoods found in North America, making it ideal for a wide range of applications where large timbers are required. Redwood is a renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable material that provides environmental advantages over alternative building materials.

There are many applications where redwood timbers work well, including shade structures, gazebos, pergolas, arbors, and even barns.  Redwood timbers also make beautiful interior design elements when used in exposed frame construction such as headers, rafters, posts, and beams.

Redwood timbers can be used in building applications where other wood species, particularly Western Red Cedar, have traditionally been used. Even though redwood and cedar have many similarities, there are significant differences that set the two apart. Redwood has a unique, deep reddish-brown color and it is more than 30 percent stronger than Western Red Cedar. Redwood mills grade to Redwood Inspection Service (RIS) grade rules, which is exclusively authorized by the American Lumber Standard Committee, Inc. to formulate grading rules for redwood lumber. Western Red Cedar producers often have proprietary grades that are difficult to compare from mill-to-mill.

Douglas-fir Timbers

Douglas-fir timbers feature excellent span and structural design values for exposed beams, framing, headers, rafters, and timber frame construction projects. They may be used extensively in new construction and remodeling projects in a variety of applications. Douglas-fir timbers readily accept paints and stains extremely well. The American Wood Council recognizes heavy timber construction as fire resistive. Architects and designers may reference Design for Code Acceptance 2: Design of Fire-Resistive Exposed Wood Members, which is available to download free on the American Wood Council website.
