Humboldt Redwood Decking Brings Beauty and Strength to Decks of all Shapes and Sizes

Humboldt Redwood Decking Brings Beauty and Strength to Decks of all Shapes and Sizes

SANTA ROSA, CA (May 14, 2018) – There’s something about redwood. The warm, rich color, and natural beauty create a breathtaking first impression. And over time, it ages gracefully with lasting character that other building materials simply cannot duplicate. Humboldt Redwood, a leading manufacturer and distributor of redwood decking materials, offers naturally strong, beautiful and environmentally friendly, redwood decking materials for beautiful, durable decks.

“Architects, contractors, and homeowners alike love to use redwood for decking projects because its look is warm and rich with a beautiful grain,” says Bob Mertz, CEO. “But redwood offers more than beauty – it is really the best of two worlds. It’s beautiful to look at, but it is also strong and durable.”

Redwood Benefits

Much lighter weight than plastic composite and tropical hardwoods, redwood can be easily cut, sawed, and drilled with regular woodworking tools. Yet for all that lightness, redwood is one of nature’s strongest building materials with shear strength up to 5x greater than plastic decking products.

Nature can be harsh, with sun, wind, rain, fire, and insects wreaking havoc on outdoor structures. Redwood is naturally resistant to termites and decay and it resists warping and splitting, all while staying comfortable to bare feet even on the hottest, sunniest days.   Redwood also has been thoroughly tested and conforms to ASTM E-84 Class B flame spread. Redwood decking Construction Common and better grades are code approved for use in California’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas without restriction.

Humboldt Redwood products are grown and harvested in a responsible, ethical manner with an eye for long-term sustainability. Redwood logs are harvested at a level consistently below the forests’ annual growth rate and Humboldt Redwood replants trees annually; two methods that ensure Humboldt Redwood will be a renewable resource for years to come. And, unlike plastic decking products, Humboldt Redwood can be recycled throughout its useful life. It is also biodegradable and will not end up in landfills.

Dimensions, Grades and Finishes

There are several factors to keep in mind when choosing Humboldt Redwood lumber and deck boards including the grade, dimension, and finish characteristic.  Humboldt Redwood offers deck boards in both 2” x 4” and 2” x 6” and in lengths from 6’ to 20’.

There are a variety of grades available that meet every design aesthetic as well as budget.  First there are the Redwood heartwood architectural grades, which are typically used in applications where attractiveness and tight joinery are desired and may be used on or near the soil. Heart Clear is the finest architectural grade widely available. It is free of defects on one face (reverse face may have slight imperfections). Heart B is a quality grade containing limited knots and other characteristics not permitted in Heart Clear.

Second, are the Redwood heartwood garden grades that are ideal for use on or near the soil in construction projects where knots or other characteristics are less important. Deck Heart is an all heartwood grade containing knots of varying sizes and other slight imperfections; available seasoned or unseasoned and graded for strength.  Construction Heart has a similar appearance as Deck Heart but is not graded for strength.

Next are the Redwood sapwood architectural grades which are unrivaled in beauty and dimensional stability. These grades should be used in applications where attractiveness and tight joinery are desired and where the building application is above ground.  Clear offers the same high-quality finish grade and quality as Heart Clear, but the architectural grade Clear contains sapwood. There is also B Grade available and it is a quality grade containing sapwood, limited knots and other characteristics not permitted in Clear. These architectural grades are ideal for use as quality deck boards and deck accessories as well as other above-ground applications.

Finally, there are the Redwood sapwood garden grades where knots or other characteristics are less important. Deck Common contains a combination of heartwood and sapwood, it is graded for strength and is great for use as deck boards, rails, balusters, and other above-ground garden uses that do not require the insect and decay resistance of Deck Heart. Construction Common features the same general characteristics as Construction Heart but contains a combination of heartwood and sapwood.
