digitalKENTE BRINGS NEW INTERPRETATION OF AFRICAN PRINTS WITH ITS DEBUT AT SURTEX

The female-led brand leverages an Afrofuturistic aesthetic and demand for tribal-influenced fashion.

CHICAGO, Il, May 14, 2018 – digitalKENTE introduces its one-of-a-kind surface designs at the SURTEX trade show May 20th, 2018 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. digitalKENTE (Booth #2750) combines modern craft and ancestral patterns, answering the call for consumers’ interest in African-inspired fashion.

Founder Tiana Denine Harris says, “It’s an honor to show our bold digital tapestries at SURTEX and have the opportunity to disrupt the norm by showing tribal-like prints in a new way.”

Inspired by the creativity of people of color throughout the world, Harris began to re-imagine West African textile patterns to create a new kind of kente: a digitalKENTE.

The surface design studio creates prints that are multi-dimensional, culturally aware, and unapologetically colorful. Their textile designs are for the woman who is unafraid of commanding attention. digitalKENTE offers licensing, direct sale, custom project work, collection planning, consulting and branding.

“The techniques we use to create our surface designs are inspired by my travels and love for my culture,” states Harris.

digitalKENTE’s prints reflect a global sensibility that uses the power of graphic design to re-mix indigenous textiles from melanin-rich cultures around the world for the woman as vibrant as her color choices.

ABOUT:

Tiana Denine Harris launched digitalKENTE in 2012 through the www.see.me exhibit titled "Art Takes Times Square" in New York City. After living in Southeast Asia for two years, Tiana began to explore the juxtaposition of colors and shapes found in indigenous hand-made textiles.

For the power of its innovative design, digitalKENTE was chosen to be a part of the inaugural African Fashion Week Chicago Pop-Up shop in the spring of 2017. Tiana has been featured on the women’s lifestyle site, The Spinsters Union, as an emerging female entrepreneur and she shared the story of digitalKENTE in a 30-second pitch at Creative Mornings Chicago, part of a global network of creatives and creative entrepreneurs.
