Turtle Tracks Family releases the sixth book in the Series at Surf Expo

Sue Trew, creator of Turtle Tracks Family is unveiling her 6th children’s book, Turtle Trips, at Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida, September 6-8, 2018. Turtle Trips joins the successful Turtle Tracks, Happy Hatchlings, Calypso Conch, Dolphin Discovery and Manatee Magic collection of fun and factual books with unique matching plush toys all written, illustrated and designed by Sue.
Hailing from Barbados, Sue and her husband run Best of Barbados Gift Shops, their 43-year-old family business with five locations. The concept for Turtle Tracks, Sue’s first book, was conceived after she and her family took a small group of children at dusk to see a ‘hatchling release’ by a local sea turtle conservation team. They watched the hatchlings negotiate the breaking waves and were filled with a sense of wonder. How many would make it back as adults? Sue went home thinking, “I should produce a fun and factual children’s book on turtles!”
That was summer of 2012 and within a few months, Sue had a great book designed – the story of a hawksbill turtle coming up on the beach to nest and about her hatchlings when they emerged. It was important to Sue to create a scientifically correct series and the facts that couldn’t fit in the story she put in the back of each book under ‘Discussion Facts’. Children and adults alike learn while having fun!
As the Turtle Tracks book took shape Sue was asked numerous questions. What was the name of the mummy turtle? Was she going to be a toy? Would the hatchlings have names and toys too? This was all new and exciting territory to Sue! ‘Tilli’ became the star of Turtle Tracks which was released in 2013. Six hatchlings followed with their own personalities and colors – Buzz, Zoom, Nibbles, Star, Moonlight and Bump, leading to a second book, Happy Hatchlings, released in 2014. It tells the adventures of six hatchlings as they emerge from their sandy nest and head to the sea for the very first time.
“Researching, writing and illustrating the books and creating the toys has been an incredible journey, but most special has been seeing them in the hands of the children for whom they were created. Knowing too that each family that reads one of my books learns more about our environment, passing on the message that we must care for the world around us.”
In 2015, Sue wrote Calypso Conch about a queen conch and her friend Blink, a peacock flounder. The following year Dolphin Discovery was launched, comparing dolphin mammals and dolphinfish, based around the story of Dart, a baby dolphin, and Rainbow, the dolphinfish.
Manatee Magic, introduced in 2017, is the tale of Munch, a young manatee on his winter migration. Along with his friends baby Mini, grandpa Hugh and a baby gator called Giz, Munch explores the warm spring where he’s come for the winter and we learn about their adventures in their river habitat.
Turtle Trips, new September 2018, is about Gus the green turtle who lives in a bay in the Caribbean Sea. It touches on some of the problems facing marine creatures with the increase of plastics in our oceans and encourages children to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. It also talks about the invasive lionfish, the work of turtle hospitals and conservation teams, etiquette for swimming with turtles and much more!
The Turtle Tracks Family has expanded to include NEW coloring placemats, plush pens, dinnerware, totes, towels, sun protection t-shirts and more. The range makes a great impact in any store and is win-win for both store owners and their customers!
