Kawara, The Japanese traditional clay roof tiles, is made of nature’s blessing, clay, and burnt in the flame hotter than 1000ºC. Technique of making kawara was introduced to Japan about 1400 years ago from the continental Asia. For Japanese, kawara has been not only roofing to protect a building from rain and wind, but also a symbol of ‘abundance’ with wishes for ‘peaceful living’ put into that combines both ‘strength’ and ‘beauty’.

Preserving the beautiful landscape of Japan.

With its history of over 1400 years in Japan, kawara is made of simple ingredients, clay, water and fire. The simplicity may be the reason it has been loved over times until today. The silver color of kawara produced from carbon has preserved the beautiful landscape of Japan, and at the same time protected countless smiles and memories of people.

Oxidized silver.

When the temperature inside the kiln goes down to certain temperature, pine needles will be added and kiln will be sealed. The enormous amount of smoke produced in lack of oxygen has no way out, and will be absorbed in kawara gradually. This is how the crystals of carbon create thin film on the surface of kawara, which creates oxidized silver color.

Ichinose KAWARA Co. Ltd. established in 1916.

We are creating living and beautiful landscape of Japan as professionals of kawara roofing.

In the concept of bringing a piece of Japan called ‘kawara’ from the roof to your hands, we created a brand of icci KAWARA PRODUCTS.
