Since our foundation in 1946 in Sumida, we have been exclusively producing  BYOUBU (the folding screens) for seasonal festivals, hotels and ceremonial halls and for interior ornaments. The history of screens goes back as old as Nara period (710-794) and it has been used as an essential piece of furnishing to block a wind.

We hope to make screens more familiar to people of today, and more fitting to modern life and aim to produce screens with modern taste.

How to use a BYOUBU.

Screens originally came from China, and its history in Japan goes back to Nara period (about 8th century). In those days, they were indispensable furnishings as some of them were put around the bedside to block the wind (bedside screen), or others were used as partitions in rooms.  Some were also used as a means to preserve a painting.

Today, screens are not much for daily use, but mainly for seasonal festivals, used with ‘hina-ningyo’ or ‘kabuto’, as well as those gold screens for weddings and ceremonial occasions.

We, KATAOKA BYOUBU MEF,CO.,LTD., are trying to change the screens that became unfamiliar to us in our modern life to something new that can add traditional Japanese touch to the interior space in modern life style.

We produce screens that can be used not only in traditional Japanese style rooms, but also in non-Japanese style rooms without being limited by types of space.

You may choose one from the existing products but also change the number of panels, size, design, and screen base to suit for all places you want to put!
