HIDEHIRA-Nuri  -a symbol of the ever-flourished Hiraizumi culture.

Hidehira-Nuri is the way of lacquering named after the 3rd generation of Oshu Fujiwara Clan that flourished in the end of Heian Period. This region was a production area for lacquer and gold, and the Buddhism art was flourishing at that time. It is thought that this was the background that Hidehira-nuri was born here. Since then, through the rise and falls of times, it has been maintained and passed through generations by the craftworkers in this region.

The crests of plants and flowers of the seasons painted on the base colors of red, black and gold, and the shapes of ware with elegant taste that fit in your hand perfectly can integrated in the modern life, and calm the hearts of the users of today as well.

Handwork that observes tradition.  -There are more than 15 processes, and the highly skilled artisans deliberately produce the products.

◇Making the wood material

Natural logs of beech, zelkova and chestnut that were cut in the mountains during the winter will be dried for 1 – 10 years to make base wood material.

◇Painting patterns

Trace the back of the pattern-drawn ‘washi’ paper with pigment, and copy the patterns onto the lacquer ware. After that, the patterns will be drawn by hand with pigmented lacquer.

◇Lacquering

To lacquer evenly, you have to move the brush in various directions. Polishing and lacquering over in layers will create smooth lacquered surface without unevenness and enhances the adherence of the lacquer.

◇Putting gold leaf

Soaking the lacquer ware in the bath, and when the lacquer is half-dried, gold leaf will be put by using wet brush.
