Processes in the metals industry have periodic load cycles with variable power requirements. Due to the nature of these load cycles, the average running load requirement is significantly lower than the peak demand requirement. Sizing the drive and distribution transformers based on average load leads to undersizing of the equipment, while using the peak load results in oversizing of the equipment. This paper discusses implementation of the IEEE/ANSI method to properly size transformers based on heat generated during the load cycle.
