Defects on the slab surface are still a significant issue for the quality of a continuously cast product. The formation of transverse and edge cracks in the straightening zone is dependent on the steel composition and the prevailing surface temperatures. To determine the susceptibility for surface cracking according to steel composition and cooling strategy, the experimental method In-Situ Material Characterization-Bending test (IMC-B) was developed. Results of investigations with different steel grades and cooling strategies show a clear correlation with plant experience. The testing revealed the harmful impact of Nb on surface quality.
