This work examined the internal and external oxidation behavior typically encountered during continuous annealing of steels. Alloy chemistry and annealing furnace conditions influence surface oxides and can lead to poor galvanized coating adherence and appearance. Surface oxidation growth and morphology of CMnSi transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel were viewed in-situ during heating with a confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM). These results were correlated with information obtained via thermogravimetry (TG). Experiments investigated effects of dewpoint temperature, surface phase and heating rate. Sample analysis techniques included SEM/TEM/EDS. Results compared to existing theoretical models and literature.
