The effects of Cr and Ni contents and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of high strength, high toughness secondary hardening steels were studied. The compositions examined (in wt. %) were 0.4C-xCr-yNi-2Mo-0.5W-0.5V. Ni levels of 3 and 5 wt. % were considered. For a Ni content of 3 wt. %, Cr was varied from 4 to 6 wt. %. For a Ni content of 5 wt. %, Cr was varied from 4.5 to 5.5 wt. %. The heat treatment variables examined were austenitizing temperature, the rate of cooling from the austenitizing temperature and tempering temperature.
