Assessment of the structural behavior of the blast furnace hearth refractory system in the design or repair stage can improve the hearth performance and reduce risk. Information such as likely cracking and gap formation locations can be used to optimize the hearth bricking pattern, materials and expansion allowances, and identify changes in the performance of the cooling system. This paper presents the application of an advanced structural assessment approach used to compare the thermal-structural performance of two significantly different hearth designs: the big-beam hearth bottom with double-ring sidewall vs. the large block bottom/sidewall with a ceramic cup.
