Tracks: Start-Ups & Upgrades

Danieli has been awarded orders for five new K-Welding® units in the last two years. The K-Welding® process consist of flash-welding the tail end of one billet to the head end of the next billet as it emerges from the reheating furnace. It eliminates the billet gap, reduces cobbles, minimizes scrap, and increases the throughput of the finished product. Five major steel producers put their confidence in the Danieli endless welding rolling technology by ordering new K-Welding® units for their production lines. Two of such lines are the most productive units in the world, operating at rates up to 180 tph. Operation of the new billet welders has brought substantial benefits in plant productivity (8% to 12% increase, according to mill typology) and efficiency increase (1.5% min.), mainly thanks to the extra-rolling time coming from the elimination of roll gap as well as significant savings in manpower. The total welding time has been optimized and reduced thus, increasing throughput. Significant improvements have also been made on the so called “spark killer” system, to greatly reduce the dispersion of sparks around the billet welder thus, minimizing the time for cleaning the machine. The resulting positive effects on production cost will allow for a very short return of the investment. The Danieli scorecard totals 30 K-Welding® units supplied or under construction Worldwide since 1997. The presentation will focus on the latest design improvements as well as performance returns from the most recent installations.
