The U. S. Steel Great Lakes Works No. 5 Continuous Pickle Line (CPL) has been in operation since the early '90s, with the original equipment supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. At its core were four original steel rubber-lined tanks with immersion heaters, and a series of dams and weirs to recirculate the acid. The acid solution turbulence created by the movement of the strip enhanced the efficiency of the pickling process. In 2015 and after more than 20 years in operation, it was necessary to revamp the line. Primetals Technologies was selected to replace the aging tanks of the existing line. The new installation brought many technological enhancements, including iBox pickling technology, polypropylene tanks, and an acid concentration control system (ACCS) that make it one of the most advanced pickle lines in operation among U. S. Steel facilities.
