Enhancement of AHSS Through Optimized Microalloying & Thermomechanical Processing
To meet the high strength and ductility targets of next-generation advanced high-strength steels, novel steel chemistries with niobium microalloying and sufficient silicon to prevent carbide formation were cast, then forged to produce steel rods. Heat treatments were applied to produce carbide-free bainite. The resulting material was characterized using mechanical tests and optical and electron microscopy, as well as electron back-scatter diffraction. The combination of heat treatments and microalloying produced steel that was cost-effective while meeting mechanical property goals.
