Apex Clean Energy has been performing power quality analysis on wind farms every month to determine the effect of harmonics, transients, switching process and internal faults on collection system, turbine reliability and substation. Transient: We monitor the effect of grid disturbance such as steady increase in voltage at the Point of Interconnect causing turbine to drive its terminal voltage causing power electronic failures. We also monitor the impact on Voltage Sag, swell and transients on Wind farm. Harmonics Analysis: Specific harmonics are monitored to see if its within IEEE requirements. Our devices are programmed to monitor all the contributing factors such as cables, turbine controllers and turbine step-up transformers. Harmonics caused by the grid due to unbalance current is known to cause drive-train damage. Event Based analysis: Every fault and switching event is monitored to detect anomalies in transformer, collection system and bus which is a big contributor to turbine equipment damage. This system is used to detect impedance faults and splicing damages in cable, bushing damages in main power transformer and other failures in generator step-up transformer. This type of monitoring is crucial and has helped us in identifying issues to react quickly before it causes longer operational downtimes. This is done by monthly root cause analysis system to determine the magnitude and number of occurrences which helps to understand the root of the problem and fix it.
