While having dinner with some friends, we stumbled on the topic of misaligned measures of success. A VP said she was having a hard time working inside a CEO’s framework because she was trying to give him what her 30 years in the business told her was the correct measure of success. The problem was that he was asking for something else. She was frustrated because she believed that she was giving him what he really needed rather than what he wanted. He was frustrated because he was getting something different from what he was asking. I see this scenario a lot in business. People are playing different games that have different rules and different measures of success. The first thing that can help combat this is a charter. A charter consists of a vision, mission statement, SMART objectives, and sometimes core values. This is great on a macro level but might not always help in a given department meeting or project kickoff. To help in the day-to-day, I propose the concept of CORE metrics. We can be successful only if we are all playing the same game and we have a common understanding of what success looks like. CORE metrics are critical to company, department, and team success.
