3:00 PM - 4:15 PM

Tracks: Speaker

When World War II broke out in Western Europe in 1940, Ernie Pyle, a native Hoosier, became a war correspondent and traveled to England, North Africa, Italy, France, and some of the Pacific islands. His articles captured the personal experiences of ordinary soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Pyle became the most popular and beloved of all correspondents. He died on April 18, 1945, on a Pacific island when a Japanese sniper shot and killed him. This presentation features a first-person dramatization of Pyle as he looks back upon his experiences covering the war, sharing excerpts from some of his most well-known articles. Wearing an authentic World War II uniform and using authentic props and photos from the past, the presenter takes his audience back to 1945 and invites them to experience the drama of war and the impact of Pyle’s stories on those who fought in it.
