Debate Room: Should Some Species Be Allowed to Die Out? (Room 205)

05 Jul 18
4:30 PM - 5:45 PM

Tracks: Debate

The world’s last male white rhino is dead. The current U.S. endangered species list contains 1,280 names. Hawaii's akikiki bird, for example, is down to 438 individuals; rangers estimate 130 man-hours of work to protect each pair of eggs. Is it realistic to try to save every existing kind of plant and animal? If not, how do we decide which, if any, “conservation-reliant species” do we keep in the lifeboat? Debate Room is not a heated debate but a fast-paced, moderated discussion where everyone gets to be heard, and the most interesting speaker gets a prize!
