Every historic property or home sits atop an archaeological site. The tangible remains of past lives create an archive of stratified deposits that record a part of history that we don’t always think about – that which we throw away, lose, or simply forget about. Here we take a look at three historic places in Indiana, all revered for their aboveground esthetics and potential to inspire wistful thinking about the past. What can be learned about these places and the people who lived there from the unseen archaeological deposits is often startling, usually wondrous, and sometimes humorous. The material world of the past is there, with its potential to inform on such big issues as cultural change, sustainability, food ways, and health, if we only stop to look down.
