Debate Room: What Qualifies as a Sport Anymore? (Room 205)

07 Jul 18
9:00 AM - 10:15 AM

Tracks: Debate

George Carlin said that unless an activity uses a ball and people get injured, it isn’t a sport. Running’s out by his criterion, and so is swimming (“just a way to keep from drowning”) and pretty much all of the Winter Olympics schedule. OK, we consider those to be true sports, but where do we draw the line? How come rhythmic gymnastics is a sport but not ballet? Is ad revenue the criterion? Debate Room is not a heated debate but a fast-paced, moderated discussion where everyone gets to be heard, and the most interesting speaker gets a prize!
