Learn the truth about gypsies and why shows like Shuteye and Gypsy Sisters undermine our knowledge and prevent understanding of this complex and diverse ethnic group. Oksana Marafioti, author of American Gypsy: A Memoir (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012), will discuss the diasporic culture of the Roma, race and ethnicity in the 21st century, the Roma image in literature, and those misleading characterizations we’ve all seen in film and on television. She’ll also speak about the process of writing a memoir and her experiences in the world of literary publishing.
