Tracks: TRACK G - Renewable Energy Strategy & Technology

The single largest issue with biomass power projects is the supply of fuel. The traditional route has been to contract directly with a mill owner for the supply of their waste however there has been an increase in the uses for agricultural waste both from demand within the power industry and alternative uses. Therefore alternative sources of cheap fuel are needed to ensure continuous supply. These are predominantly either straw wastes that are left in fields after harvesting or energy crops that are grown specifically to supply power plants. The energy crops can be either fast growing trees or fast growing grasses. The presentation reviews the various supply options, engineering limitations (e.g. boiler and material handling) as well as the logistical issues related to supplying fuels over long distances and sometimes from remote locations. Case studies are taken from the sugarcane industry and from energy crops being grown in the Philippines.
