TCFD, Renewables, and the Trilemma (Room Garuda 7A, 1st Floor)

TCFD - Risks and opportunities: The momentum created by the Paris Agreement led to an increase in regulatory actions around ESG reporting instruments and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) published its recommendations for disclosing climate-related risks in middle of last year. The TCFD report represents a framework for companies to disclose climate-related information consistently in their mainstream financial filings. Reporting financial activity using the lens of climate-related risk would help more appropriately price risks and allocate capital in the context of climate change. The initiative is voluntary, would help speed the transition to a low-carbon economy, and would shift the corporate perspective beyond immediate concerns. Renewable Energy technologies: Recent incidents involving energy supply issues at energy-intensive sites have resulted in significant operational impacts exposing energy security risks. Many energy-intensive companies to prevent the reoccurrence of such events have begun to undertake steps to improve the robustness of operations and develop plans to address gaps. By integrating the use of new technologies and the diverse use of energy sources helps to increase efficiency, limit operational costs and positions the company for greater energy security going forward. There are a few surveyed energy technologies, where policies have provided clear signals, which have matured over time and with reducing operational costs, are on track to achieve sustainability goals, where the progress has been substantial, such as: Solar photovoltaics, Energy storage, and Electric vehicles. Why the Power Sector? The trilemma of balancing affordability, reliability, and emission intensity along with the maintenance of sustainability risks is nothing new, and both the policy developers and industry are grappling with the challenge what is the best way to identify, plan, build, regulate and operate power assets.
