Industrialization and Current Field Experience of 3D Printed Gas Turbine Components (Room Garuda 10B, 1st Floor)

During the last years, a new revolutionary way of manufacturing - Additive Manufacturing (AM), has emerged the industry and is considered as a game-changer. This paper will explain the usability of AM for critical fluidic, hydraulic and structural components. Currently Siemens is using this technology not only for prototyping, limited repair and manufacturing of gas turbine components but also offers its competency for designing and manufacturing of low volume production of challenging applications to external partners within the field of aerospace, automotive and other industries. The AM technology enables OEM within e.g. power generation to do the manufacturing and repair of gas turbine components faster and at the same time with enhanced functionality and performance. Industrialization of the AM technology at Siemens and the first field experience of AM manufactured components will be discussed in this article. Recently Siemens applied AM technology for the repair of gas turbine components and in particular burners of SGT-800 industrial gas turbines. It was shown that the replacement of conventional repair with AM resulted in significant reduction of repair time. Another recent successful application of AM application at Siemens is the manufacturing of advanced burner swirl for SGT-750 industrial gas turbine. In this case the AM was the only technology enables to manufacture this design of the swirl. The excellent example of effective application of AM technology for remanufacturing of obsolete components was demonstrated on the AM manufacturing of water pump impeller, part of the fire protection system at one of the nuclear power station in Slovenia. In this case the 3D model of the impeller was obtained by X-ray tomography with followed digital ‘repair’ of the scanned model to original geometry. At Siemens the concept of ‘Spare parts on demands’ was launched by 3D printed SGT-1000F burners tip for Nuclear Power station in Czech Republic.
