Tracks: Sensors @ Work

There are a growing number of harsh environment applications that require motion sensing at extreme temperatures such as down-hole drilling, avionics and heavy industrial. Many of these systems have a need for precision sensors, including motion sensors, that must be conditioned and digitized at a high resolution. As a case study of such a system, we will examine a MEMS gyroscope rated for 175C operation, including the theory of operation and methods for calibration over temperature. Next we will discuss a high temperature data acquisition signal chain built around a 16-bit ADC, including a full reference design that has been characterized for operation at 175C. Finally, we will discuss real world applications for such a sensor signal chain in a down-hole drilling environment.
