Since early in the first year of the Trump administration, a major realignment in the Middle East appears to be underway. Saudi Arabia and its allies appear to be escalating tensions with Iran, with an announced intention undermining Iranian influence throughout the region, including in Lebanon and Syria. Concomitantly, a de facto alliance between Israel and Saudi Arabia appears to be emerging, prompted by the developments with Iran. In the meantime, U.S. policy is in a state of flux, as historic long-term U.S. allies fall on different sides of the fissures that are now emerging. These and other issues will be considered.
