Archipelagos such as Indonesia and the Philippines plus countries with underdeveloped grids such as Cambodia and Myanmar are prime locations for developing mini grids. The complexity of these grids can vary between locations and the growth of renewable energy has resulted in a significant decrease in their costs, especially for solar. Historically reciprocating engines have been the basis for mini grid operations however the high cost of oil and the reducing cost of renewable energy means that they are being relegated to providing grid support including operation when intermittent sources aren’t available. The mini grids are increasingly including biomass / biogas, wind, solar and batteries. The use of multiple power generation sources means that the control system needs to be far more complex than was previously required however it also gives an opportunity to optimize systems in a manner that was previously not possible.
