This paper will focus on what project sponsors need to do to ensure they are "Fit for Finance" in order to favorably position themselves for the competitive international project financing market. In addition to having good project economics, developers today need to demonstrate that they have properly managed their project's environmental and social risks AND that they have the internal corporate capacity to manage these risks through project construction and operations. This paper will help developers assess their "fitness" for finance by identifying key environmental and social risks facing power projects, providing checklists to evaluating whether these risks are managed, and describing the Environmental and Social Management Systems that they need to have in place to give lenders the comfort that the projects are ready for financing.
