Tracks: TRACK F - Capitalizing on Digitalization

With growing power demand across world, emphasis on renewable generation, technological changes and competitive energy market, it is important to avoid unwanted losses due to the lack of qualified power plant personnel to handle various start-up and load varying scenarios. With the next generation of digitalization, pairing digital objects to physical objects, in this case, a digital twin of the actual power plant, makes it possible for a complete digital model which can be used for operation, simulation and analysis. Combining data, intelligence and calculation algorithm to an actual power plant, allows the plant operator to understand the past, present as well as being able to predict the future operations and processes through hands-on experience of a virtual plant, without having to meddle with the actual plant. This in turn reduces unwanted plant outages enabling effective optimization to improve operation and processes as well as increased revenue and plant availability. This paper will discuss about 1) challenges for plant owners in educating their operators 2) learning through simulation at its digital twin 3) benefits 4) successful implementation.
