Tracks: Track 1: Megatrends: Decarbonization, Decentralization and Digitalization

The concept of digitalization includes the use of more digital technologies (the digitization element), making more and more business decisions based on the data, automating business processes and enabling the digital worker. Power generation, transmission and distribution companies who ignore this full scope do so at their own peril. We are already seeing significant gaps in business results between the early digital adopters and those "waiting to see" ...and the race is on. Digitalization should be approached programmatically, not as a project. And, it should be viewed through the lens of data-driven continuous improvement. In this presentation, we will present a very practical approach to developing a vision, a strategy and a plan to establish digital transformation as a program. The approach includes the foundation of an operational enterprise wide data infrastructure; the development of a vision, strategy and plan; the use of a capability and maturity model (for both OT and IT personas) to develop an understanding of organizational readiness; the establishment of target organization capabilities; the development of the implementation or delivery model; and most importantly the connectivity to the expected business results, the targeted use or opportunity cases. We will also share a number of classical risks to avoid, such as a tendency to focus on sites or plants instead of the enterprise or to base the business case on quick wins instead of truly understanding the strategic, long-term value of the digital transformation.
