Tracks: Inspection

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for all modes of transportation in North Carolina. NCDOT maintains one of the largest highway systems in the nation with nearly 80,000 miles of highway statewide. NCDOT is also responsible for more than 13,500 bridge and an additional 4,500 culverts and pipes. North Carolina has nearly 3,300 miles of mainline railroad track and approximately 5,000 crossings as well as 72 publicly-owned airports. All this infrastructure requires regular inspections to ensure safety and reduce delays. About four years ago, NCDOT established a UAS Program that has enabled the use of drones for inspections, which has not only been cost effective, but also saves time and enhances safety. As the UAS Program Engineer for NCDOT, the instructor's responsibility is to ensure all drone operations are conducted safely as per federal and state regulations. If you are new to this industry or are interested in sharpening your skills, this class will definitely help guide you. This class will cover topics such as best practices, lessons learned, system limitations, data processing, and more.
