Tracks: Track 2: Repositioning Conventional Power Generation

Advanced class Combined Cycle plants continue to play an important role in power generation investments globally. Lower specific investment cost and higher efficiency are the main drivers for investors to switch from F-class to H-class. However, to fulfill their load balancing role especially with growing intermittent renewable generation, also very large gas turbines have to provide maximum operational flexibility already today or in later plant life. The GT36 is a new very large combustion turbine in the advanced technology class serving both 50 and 60 Hz markets. It has been designed for today’s and future customer needs combining high performance, flexibility and serviceability. After the announcement of this new engine at the Power-Gen 2016 in Milano and it’s technical presentation at the Power-Gen Europe 2017 in Cologne this paper reports about thorough validation campaign at the Ansaldo validation power plant in Birr Switzerland and the commercial market introduction. The features of the GT36 are beneficial for many customers and supporting the ongoing change in the energy mix. The paper includes an update on the latest improvements in terms of power and efficiency of the engine.
