Deregulation, nontraditional competition, new business models, electric vehicles, rooftop solar, residential batteries, climate change, carbon regulation, and political/regulatory pressures have become some of the distinguishing characteristics of the electric utility industry - an industry undergoing the most dramatic and disruptive transformation in its 150 year history. Search the internet for "energy game changer" and you'll find references to shale gas, LEDs, grid storage, mobility, distributed generation, grid integration, regulatory reform…the list goes on and on. But the real game changer isn't a fuel source or grid hardware or a network architecture or a policy initiative. It's a carbon-based, carbon-emitting life form: the customer…and specifically a IoT-enabled customer. Smart meters, smart thermostats, home energy monitoring systems, and other IoT devices are providing immense amounts of the detail-rich data that utilities need as they seek to shift customer usage away from peak demand periods, optimize rate plans and pricing programs, prevent attrition of profitable customers, attract new customers, and cross-sell new products and services to existing customers. This presentation will focus on why and how analytics are uniquely positioned to provide game changing capabilities for Utility marketers in four key areas: strategy and operations, marketing analytics, multi-channel engagement and the digital experience.
