Service providers have collected operations data as a wellsite execution best practice for decades. Surface sensors, downhole tools, and instrumented equipment generate enormous—and growing—data volumes. Service companies leverage data during operation execution and provide portions to the operating company as service deliverables, which the operator owns. While engineers might use data for offset analysis in the next well design or for operational planning, data typically remains filed away, relatively inaccessible and thus failing to generate additional value. The industry is focusing on "digital transformation”, which has many interpretations. Machine learning and data analytics are promising; however, it requires large training datasets to be effective. Dataset availability presents new opportunities for generating value; however, accessing and unifying the data can include potential risk. Organizations should address this challenge to enable data science activities. Many companies have responded by providing solutions that combine collected data in a single repository; however, integrating data into a single, cloud-based environment is not sufficient. Defining a cohesive data governance-operating model addressing legal and contractual obligations and applying proper data curation workflows is the goal. A case history on how decades of real-time drilling data can be leveraged for drilling efficiency analytics while securing compliance with existing obligations is presented.
