Tracks: TRACK G - Renewable Energy Strategy & Technology

As an archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia faces serious challenges to provide electricity in remote and isolated areas in Indonesia. At the same time, Indonesia is a tropical country located along the equatorial line with high solar irradiation, making Solar Power as the ideal solution for rural electrification for these remote and isolated areas. Majority of more than its 150 Solar Power projects successfully completed by SEDAYU since 2009 are Off-grid and Hybrid Solar Power projects using the world’s latest Solar Power and Energy Storage System technologies. Located in remote and isolated rural areas as part of the Program by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic Indonesia SEDAYU develops the Smart Grid including the Solar Power plant, the transmission lines from the plant to every house, the installation of power points and energy limiter appliances in individual houses. With the shorter duration to develop the Solar Power plants and the scalability character of Solar Power plants, this is the ideal solution for rural electrification in remote and isolated areas in Indonesia; and instead of paying high cost and unreliable delivery of petrol for their diesel generators, the rural communities now use reliable Power Generation model with much lower cost. The multiplier effect of the successful implementation of these Smart Grid Renewable Energy projects for rural areas in Indonesia is significant, from providing the basic needs of health and education system to improving the welfare of the local communities. With low electrification ratios in rural Indonesia and its logistic and financial challenges of the remote rural areas, Solar Power is the ideal solution to accelerate the electrification ratio and at the same time, to increase the Renewable Energy in Indonesia’s National Energy Mix, as per the commitment of the Indonesian government for Climate Change in the Paris Agreement.
