State-of -the-art CFB Technology Combined with Local Execution – the First Operational Experience of Babelan Power Plant (Room Garuda 12, 1st Floor)

Valmet supplied PT Cikarang Listrindo in Babelan outside Jakarta in Indonesia two coal fired CFB boilers with a total capacity of 280 MWe . The delivery also included power plant wide Valmet DNA control system. The investment increased the company’s electricity production by approximately 30 %. The plant was commissioned in 2017. PT Cikarang Listrindo, a power company, engages in electricity generation and distribution to industrial estates which form a large industrial area with many factories that require stable power supply. The company also supplies electricity to the National Power Grid. Company started their operations in 1992 with a capacity of 76 MWe and their customer base has increased on a steady basis, requiring regular increases in generation capacity being today 1144 MWe,. When the company decided to increase their power production capacity in 2011 it opted for coal fired power generation for diversification of its fuel base from relying exclusively on natural gas and selected CFB technology for the boilers due to the lower environmental impact of this technology Cikarang two identical boilers are designed to fire local Indonesian coal with steam values 134 kg/s, 130 bar, 543°C. The coal heating value is ranging from 15 to 20 MJ/kg (HHV, AR) and moisture content 20-33 %. Boilers are equipped with limestone injection for SO2 reduction, and ESP for particulates. The future requirements have been considered in emission control equipment design. CFB boiler design represents the most modern CFB technology with water-cooled high efficiency cyclones and water-cooled integrated bed ash coolers. The same Valmet design is offered all around the world but the delivery is handled from Asian organization including manufacturing and sourcing in Asia. The paper describes the project phase with all challenges and now when the plant is in commercial operation also the first operation experience is included.
