4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Tracks: TRACK E - Distributed Energy Resources

The concept of microgrids is not new at all, but not many actors are aware of the benefits of this alternative energy supply solution. Recently, microgrid projects have grown rapidly and their applications have also been significantly extended, thanks to the the advancement of various distributed generation technologies, such as CHP, solar PV, solar thermal and battery storage. In this presentation, I will discuss how the advancement of these technologies makes microgrids more practical, on renewable based or hybrid mode. I will then discuss the benefits that microgrids bring with respect to the economic, environmental, social and operational aspects, and what are the applications we see today by illustrating some examples (used in critical facilities in urban area, industrial complex, remote area etc.). After that, I will provide some market outlook of microgrids investment. I will also demonstrate some business models that could make microgrids viable for interested parties, and what roles different actors can play. Lastly, I will highlight what other considerations ones should make in terms of policy, regulation and site requirement if they are interested in microgrids as an alternative energy supply solution, or what governments or regulators should consider if they would like to facilitate the development of microgrids in their territories. The aim of the presentation is to give an insightful overview of microgrids and explain why microgrids are becoming a viable alternative energy supply solution to consumers.
