Tracks: TRACK F - Capitalizing on Digitalization

Uniper's position was once of the traditional asset owner, operator and end-to-end energy company, with its assets and market activities tending to work as analogue islands. Relying on leading, but not connected, engineering and commercial expertise, the approach was effective to a point, but posed a limit on not only resource efficiency but the optimisation and effectiveness of decision making. Recognising the needed for a connected approach, Uniper set about its digitalisation journey with the design and delivery of a single online ecosystem, bringing together both the business' data and range of offerings. From machine learning based plant health and performance monitoring, to predictive and optimised maintenance and smart scheduling of plant, Uniper's Enerlytics platform and its underlying data lake has successfully and powerfully leveraged intelligent and scalable cloud concepts, but its implementation has also naturally posed challenges. This paper and presentation will therefore describe Uniper's journey towards becoming a digital generation business, covering compelling aspects of technology choices, business integration for asset owners and operators, and industry outcomes, but with key additional focus on how a varied range of stakeholders have been approached and engaged, an agile approach has ensured live functionality continues to be regularly shipped to users, and a rigorous business case has rationalised bold moves and vitally balanced 'business pull' and 'technology push'.
