Tracks: TRACK F - Capitalizing on Digitalization

The rate of technology change continues to accelerate. What was science fiction ten years ago is reality in our everyday lives today. If past experience is indicative of future capability, our accuracy in predicting technologies that will mature and ultimately impact our lives in future decades is surprisingly good. However, we often grossly over-predict or underestimate the IMPLICATIONS of how these technologies will impact our everyday lives. For example, the first power plant commissioned in the US for industrial use was in 1879. It took 40 years (1920) for widespread productivity improvements to be recognized through electrification. This drive to improve was led by progressive engineers and a significant number of new manufacturing plants coming online. The people and process change was immense. The near-certainty of technology change coupled with uncertain implications creates opportunities for us to impact the future state. Beyond specific work tasks these uncertain implications will impact how we hire, train, retain, and build the workforce of the future. In this discussion we will (1) highlight relevant emerging technologies (2) discuss probable implications on the future of work in the digital power plant and (3) describe the role we will all have in creating this exciting future. Let’s write the future. Together.
