The global turn to renewable power generation is disrupting the energy landscape. Smaller and decentralized power generation units will dominate the energy market, mostly generated by homes, businesses, municipalities and independent power providers. A sustainable power generation in future will comprise 60 – 80 percent of renewable penetration. The power generation and power distribution companies face the challenge to enable a reliable, secure, stable and cost efficient power supply based on heavily volatile sources that produce the energy decoupled from place and time of consumption. Facing a similar challenge, Cloud Services, e.g. Microsoft Azure Cloud, ensure 99,99% availability. Microsoft managed to minimize overcapacity of the required hardware by using intelligent digital technology. e show that we can apply the lessons learned from the data center business to avoid overcapacity in power generation installations and ensure cost efficient energy systems while maintaining the high reliability standards of modern power supply.
