Predicting turbine performance in complex flow remains a challenging problem which contributes to uncertainty in energy production assessments. Date science techniques combining large data sets inclusive of remote sensing enable reduction of this uncertainty. This presentation will share the pros and cons of advanced predictive modeling against the various wind speed definitions in the new edition of IEC 61400-12-1 (Ed. 2 2017), and how such an approach can be used for energy production assessments. Traditional IEC methods and data science based approaches will be tested and compared to understand the best one for predicting turbine performance given the data available during power performance measurements as well as pre-construction resource assessments and next steps for the industry to consider.
