More and more microgrid systems around the world are considering incorporating renewable energy into their power generation asset. When wind energy is an option, an effective wind resource measurement campaign and energy yield analysis are critical in the success of system configuration design. However, wind measurement campaigns are often more challenging for microgrid systems, as they are often located in remote areas and harsh natural environment. Besides , the subsequent system integration analysis often necessitates an energy yield assessment methodology with higher temporal resolution than typically required for grid-tied commercial systems. This presentation will be a case study for the Inuvik wind-diesel-storage project located approximately 200 km north of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories in Canada, highlighting the most important challenges encountered during the wind study, and how they relate to the overall system design and time series integration analysis.
