Tracks: Evolution of Energy Production Estimation Methods, Poster Presentation

The emergence and advancement of lidar technology has been making a transformational impact on the development and operation of wind farms. Lidar technology has advanced from vertical profiling lidar to scanning lidar, from one single lidar to dual doppler and synchronized triple doppler, and from ground-based lidar to nacelle-based and floating lidar. The advancement has made it possible to directly measure wind across the entire rotor plane over the entire wind farm. In this presentation, a summary will be presented with case studies illustrating the advancement of lidar technology in the last five years. A discussion will follow to describe the benefits and challenges of lidar for both wind resource assessment and wind farm operations. Note: This could also be adapted to be specific to scanning lidar.
