Above-Sheathing Ventilation: The Forgotten Cool Roof (Room Sustainability Learning Center)

12 Oct 22
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Tracks: Building Envelope, Sustainability

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has worked with Oak Ridge and other national laboratories in the past to quantify the energy efficiency boost provided by Above-Sheathing Ventilation (ASV) and relate it to the performance of cool roof systems. These efforts found that when implemented appropriately, ASV energy efficiency improvements can equal, and often exceeds, that of cool roof systems in both new and retrofit construction. This has even been recognized in high-performance green building programs such as National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Certification and previous versions of the California Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards. Many manufacturers offer products specifically for retrofitting of ASV systems as a reroof provides an excellent opportunity. Yet ASV is often overlooked as a possibility for an energy retrofit simply because of lack of awareness. This session will review the results of the ASV research conducted, provide a high-level overview of the products available to implement ASV and brief explanation of ASV as recognized by current building energy efficiency standards.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand basic ASV Principles and nomenclature
  • Be able to describe to a layman how ASV works
  • Learn how to describe to a layman client how much energy ASV can save them for a particular application
  • Learn how to describe to a layman how ASV is recognized in their building energy efficiency standard
  • Identify and specify ASV products for a retrofit product
