Spatial Wallpaper

The reinventing of a space, by the user, allows for an immediate connection between person and place. The system is comprised of manipulable flat-packed wall tiles creating a reinvention of wallpaper. One that is interactive between person and place. Instead of merely viewing the wallpaper as a decoration, these tiles foster a relationship and are engaging; allowing the user to determine what they need in that time.

Inspired by the flexibility of folding paper, this project adopts Origami modules in the shape of hollow cube deformations of different dimensions and levels to create a versatile and interactive environment. Each module works as a square “tile“ that can be transformed into open or enclosed nooks, shelves, or places to rest. In the process of these transformations, visitors are involved and are in fact the builders of this environment. They can shape and re-shape the modules thus shifting different parts of the environment between 2D and 3D forms. As a result, the space will constantly change.
