Pasi Lautala is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geospatial Engineering, the Director of Michigan Tech Transportation Institute, and the Founder and Director of the Rail Transportation Program (RTP) at Michigan Tech. Under his leadership, Michigan Tech has obtained over $5.0 million in research in railway transportation topics, ranging from railway grade crossing and trespasser safety to multimodal logistics and railway education. The RTP has also been awarded with over $1 million in private and industry gifts. At the same time, Michigan Tech has expanded rail related education and research to several departments and topics and in fall, 2016, Michigan Tech started offering a minor in Rail Transportation. Dr. Lautala is also the Rail Group Chair for the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He was appointed by the State of Michigan Governor in 2013 to be a member of the Michigan Commission for Logistics and Supply Chain Collaboration.
