On May 1, 2012, Jason Verdugo M.Ed. took over the helm of the Piper athletic program. As athletic director, Verdugo sets the direction for the athletic department’s 20 sports teams by assisting coaches, managing the athletic budget, overseeing management for sporting events, and coordinating communication with the MIAC conference office. Prior to taking the athletic director’s role, Verdugo served 11 seasons as head coach of the Pipers baseball team. He retired as the winningest baseball coach in school history with more than 200 career victories. His 2011 team won 29 games, the MIAC post-season championship and made the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA D-III tournament. He also served as an Assistant Athletic Director, the school’s Director of Compliance and assisted in fundraising for the department. Jason is also on several committees at Hamline. He is a member of the University Leadership and President Staff, the Academic and Student Affairs Committee and the University Strategic Planning Committee. He also serves on the Piper Athletic Association board, which helps connect alumni with the athletic department and helps raises funds for the athletic department. Jason is also involved at the national level, having served as NCAA regional representative for the Midwest regional baseball coaches. He was also selected as class member and completed the prestigious NCAA Pathways program in 2012. As a player, Verdugo was a football and baseball standout at Arizona State University where he was a member of the 1994 team that went to the College World Series. He was also the backup QB to former NFLer Jake Plummer and played alongside the late Pat Tillman. He earned a BA in history from ASU, graduating in 1997. During his junior year at ASU, Verdugo was drafted as a pitcher in the sixth round by the Anaheim Angels. Verdugo was drafted again by San Francisco during his senior year and played professionally for that organization from 1997-2000.
